activity available all year round
"The Spanish Yellowstone"
Somiedo is home to Western Europe’s largest bear population. Forbes recently dubbed it “Spain’s Yellowstone”, and National Geographic named it one of the world’s top travel destinations.
On the trail of the Cantabrian bear
Somiedo is as impressive as it is demanding: the steepness of the terrain, the vegetation… That’s why we offer outings led by an experienced nature photographer like Romain Guerin.
In this adventure, we’ll discover the lesser-known places from which we can observe the different species (bear, deer, isard, wildcat…), always from a photographic and artistic point of view, combined with our guide’s skills in monitoring and interpreting the environment.
The excursions take the form of days divided into two parts. In the morning from dawn, then in the afternoon until dusk. A total of 8h/day, depending on conditions and opportunities.
Romain, your guide
For over 5 years now, I’ve been exploring, photographing, filming and writing. Depicting the savagery of a world where Western Europe’s last large predators live. The Somiedo Natural Park is a jewel of nature in the heart of the Cantabrian mountain range, home to a unique flora and fauna. From the smallest bird, the Common Goldcrest, to Europe’s largest mammal, the bear.
It took me many months in the field to get to the heart of these animals, especially the bear. I had to get back to basics. In a world where everything moves (too) fast, I had to adapt, slow down, live with the seasons to finally live with the bears.

Our philosophy
After many years of observing bears and other species throughout the seasons, we have come to the conclusion that the only way to contribute to their protection is to make them known as they live: in their natural habitat, with the greatest respect for their environment and avoiding the slightest human intervention.
What’s really revealing is to know their habits, what they eat according to the season, where they sleep…
Knowledge is the key, because it’s the only way to grasp the reality of wild life.
