Summer expands
As summer approaches, herbaceous plants become increasingly scarce. Bears continue to consume umbellifers in wetlands, and also go in search of invertebrates, turning over any stones in their path. July soon arrives. The cherry season is at its peak, and the plantigrades don’t hesitate to climb the slender branches of the trees to eat the fruit directly, leaving obvious signs of their presence.
Finally, in August, the fruit begins to ripen. The most important are buckthorn (Rhamnus alpina) and, above all, blueberries, the season’s staple food. Each bear needs to consume a few thousand of these pea-sized fruits every day to cover its energy requirements – a great opportunity for long observations!
From late August to late September, bears feed mainly on hazelnuts.
In September, you can also hear the bellowing of the stag. This is an excellent opportunity to observe and photograph these animals in a magnificent alpine setting. Wolves often take advantage of the deer’s vulnerability at this time of year to hunt them.
